# Example 222 — Safe once, not safe twice

`idempotence_witness.eml` applies four cleanup routines up to five times each and checks the property that every retry depends on: `f(f(x)) == f(x)`.

## EML

```eml
# Self-authored for the EML case corpus (no external origin). Operations that
# are safe to run once and not safe to run twice.
#
# A cleanup function is idempotent when applying it again changes nothing:
#
#     f(f(x)) == f(x)     for every x
#
# Almost every "normalize", "sanitize", "trim", "escape" and "migrate" routine
# is written as if this were automatic. It is not automatic - it is a property
# that has to hold, and the ones that fail do so quietly, because the second
# application produces a value that still looks like a clean value.
#
# Four routines are compared, all plausible, all doing the same job:
#
#     strip_prefix     removes ONE leading "-" if present
#     strip_prefixes   removes every leading "-"
#     escape_once      turns "&" into "&"
#     escape_guarded   the same, but leaves an already-escaped "&" alone
#
# `strip_prefix` and `escape_once` are the ones that fail, and they fail in
# opposite directions. Stripping one prefix per call loses data on the second
# call; escaping on every call ADDS data on the second, so "&" becomes
# "&" and a retry that was meant to be harmless corrupts the payload.
#
# Retries are why this matters. A queue that redelivers a message, a form that
# is submitted twice, a migration re-run after a partial failure - all of them
# apply the operation a second time to something that has already had it. The
# system is correct only if the operation is idempotent, and nothing in the
# type of the value records whether it is.
#
# The check is not a spot test. Every routine is applied up to five times to
# every input, and the run is only idempotent if the value stops changing
# after the first application and stays stopped.
checks passed: 5/5
Two routines settle on the first application; two never do.
Nothing in the value records whether it has been through the operation.
That is the whole difficulty: `strip_prefix` cannot tell a string it has
already trimmed from one that arrived that way, and `escape_once` cannot
tell an escaped ampersand from a literal one. Idempotence is bought by
making the OUTPUT recognisable to the function - which is what the guard
does, and what removing every prefix rather than one does.
